The League of Young Inventors Building Bridges Kit

From idea to structure — students engineer bridges with purpose

The Building Bridges Kit empowers students in grades 3-5 to tackle real infrastructure challenges by designing, building and testing model bridges. With scaffolded lessons, standard alignment and hands-on materials, this is a full turnkey engineering unit.

In the Building Bridges unit from The League of Young Inventors, students step into the role of civil engineers and problem-solvers tasked with connecting gaps across neighborhoods, streams, or transit corridors. Designed for grades 3–5, this kit combines research, design, hands-on modelling and real testing to explore structural engineering principles like beams, arches, trusses, load distribution, and material choice.

Build Real Bridges, Engineer Real Skills: Building Bridges Kit

Over 8–10 lessons (approximately 10 hours of instruction), learners work in teams to survey location requirements, brainstorm bridge types, prototype with everyday materials (paper, pipe-cleaners, string, craft sticks), and then test their models for strength, stability, and design quality. They reflect on failures, refine designs, and pitch their final bridge solution. The embedded curriculum provides slide decks, teacher guides, student worksheets, media support and a kit of class-ready materials.

What sets this unit apart is its alignment to NGSS engineering practices and its focus on real-world design constraints: “Three locations in the neighborhood need new bridges, so Civil Engineers call on students to step in and design solutions that meet each community’s specific needs.” Teachers appreciate the ready-to-go scaffolding, while students enjoy genuine engineering challenges and collaborative prototyping. Whether in a STEM elective, makerspace or general classroom, this kit bridges engineering, teamwork, creativity and reflection.

What’s Included in the Box

  • Printed slide-based lesson decks (8-10 lessons) aligned to grade 3-5 standards

  • Standards-alignment documentation for teacher planning

  • Hands-on materials kit sized for up to 30 students (e.g., paper, pipe-cleaners, string, craft sticks, small connectors).

  • Student worksheets and build-log templates (sketch, test, iterate, reflect).

  • Teacher guide with facilitation notes, differentiation tips, and assessment suggestions.

  • Embedded media access: video clips, prompts, discussion starters.

  • Reflection and presentation prompts for student teams to share design reasoning.

  • Storage/organizer tray for class-kit materials (portable and reusable).

The Building Bridges Kit transforms abstract STEM concepts into concrete action. Students don’t just learn about bridges—they design them, build them, test them, improve them and present them. It’s engineering made meaningful, age-appropriate, and deeply engaging.
