STIIX Boat Project: Design, Build & Test Real Boats
Over a class period or unit (2–4 hours of programming time), students plan, test, refine, and document their ship designs utilizing STIIX Boat Project kit. The challenge framework includes constraint limits and performance goals, driving real iteration and analysis. Alongside build time, the project features five instructional video modules: Intro, Academic Principles, “How To,” Testing & Evaluation, and a Bonus Career Spotlight.
Teachers receive fully scaffolded support: lesson plans, slide decks, worksheets, data logs, answer keys, and evaluation guides. Because STIIX is engineering-driven, the project emphasizes student agency: the videos explain guiding principles but leave space for learner creativity and iteration.
The STIIX Boat Project aligns with NGSS (especially MS-PS2, MS-ETS) and other science/engineering standards. It’s ideal for STEM classes, engineering electives, afterschool, or makerspace settings. Whether students succeed or boats fail, the real learning comes through iteration, analysis, and redesign.
