STIIX Golf Project: Engineering the Perfect Swing
In the STIIX Golf Project, students step into the role of golf-course designers and engineers, tasked with building a system that propels a golf ball (or similar projectile) in a controlled, high-performance way. Inspired by real-world physics and design thinking, this project encourages learners to explore how launch angle, force, trajectory, and structure all interact to affect distance and accuracy.
Across the guided engineering cycle, students watch videos that explain core scientific concepts (Intro, Academic, How-To, Testing & Evaluation, and a real-world engineer spotlight), then brainstorm, prototype, test, record data, and iterate. They design launch mechanisms using STIIX’s modular components: beams, elastics, connectors, and adjustable structures. The challenge is not just to send the ball far — but to do so with stability, repeatability, and awareness of physics trade-offs.
During testing, teams measure launch distance, angle, consistency, and speed. They reflect on failed launches, redesign, and try again — pushing their understanding of energy transfer, gravity, and mechanical advantage. The real magic happens when students learn that small tweaks (angle of launch, strength of pull, structure reinforcement) make big differences in performance.
Teachers receive full curriculum support: slide decks, detailed lesson plans, build-logs, student worksheets, and embedded media, with alignment to NGSS engineering and physical science standards. This makes integrating the project into STEM electives, makerspaces, or after-school programs both easy and powerful.
