STIIX Stoplight Project

Make traffic systems come alive

Students design, build, and test a working stoplight — learning about electrical circuits, timing, control systems, and systems engineering with real-world relevance.

By the end of this project, students don’t just understand stoplights—they build one. The STIIX Stoplight Project gives learners hands-on experience with electrical systems, control logic, and system-level thinking in a way that really powers student creativity and problem-solving.

STIIX Stoplight Project: Building Brainpower with Traffic Systems

In the STIIX Stoplight Project, students become traffic engineers in STIIX-Ville, tasked with designing a functioning stoplight model that mimics real-world traffic control systems. This challenge invites learners to explore key concepts like circuitry, timing, control logic, and system redundancy — all grounded in a real engineering problem.

Over a ~1 hour program, learners use STIIX’s five-video curriculum (Intro, Academic Concepts, How-To Build, Testing & Evaluation, and Career Spotlight) to understand how real stoplights work, and why timing and safety matter. They sketch their designs, choose how many lights to build (red, yellow, green), wire them in sequence using STIIX components, and program (or orchestrate) their own stop-go behavior.

Testing is a core part of the project: students measure how long each light stays illuminated, simulate “conflict” scenarios (like turning on two lights at once), and optimize timing sequences for safety and efficiency. Through iterative redesign, they reflect on how electrical load, timing delays, and component choice impact performance. They learn that engineering isn’t just about building—it’s about thinking carefully, planning for failure, and improving through testing.

Teachers receive a complete instructional package: slide decks, build logs, student worksheets, evaluation guides, and reflection prompts — aligned to NGSS engineering design standards (e.g. analyzing multiple design solutions). This makes integration seamless in STEM, physics, or tech education settings.
